Market Services

WWPA maintains the most comprehensive statistical information available on the Western lumber industry. Statistical information on Western lumber markets and industry performance are compiled by the Association's Economic Services Department.

Much of this information is provided by Western mills, as well as government reports and other statistical sources. Association business information activities include:

  • Lumber Price Index History. Click here for updated and revised Coast and Inland Lumber Price Index reports.

  • Western lumber industry performance. WWPA produces weekly, monthly and annual reports which summarize industry activity in the region. The Barometer report shows lumber production, orders, shipments and inventories for the week, with year-to-date totals and comparisons to the previous year. The monthly Western Lumber Facts provides an overview of lumber industry indicators, from housing starts to U.S. Forest Service timber sales. The annual Statistics for Analysis gives a detailed look at Western lumber production for the year, from species to grade and sizes.

  • U.S. lumber supply and demand. The Statistical Yearbook of the Western Lumber Industry summarizes industry performance for the most recent year, with statistics for individual Western states, lumber imports and exports, and consumption data. Exclusively for Members, the Association produce twice a year the WWPA Economic Forecast, considered one of the most accurate U.S. lumber market outlooks available today. The forecast covers supply sources, including lumber imports, and market usage volumes.

  • Past prices for Western products. Using invoices provided by mills, the Association compiles past price information on Western lumber products. This price data is the basis for the monthly Coast and Inland Price Indexes, which are used by the U.S. Forest Service and others to adjust the stumpage price paid on timber harvests. The Association also publishes the Coast and Inland F.O.B. Price Summary report each month, which is a key item analysis by species showing the volume produced and the average price for each grade.

WWPA has prepared a Frequently Asked Questions section on its Lumber Price Indexes and Association lumber price statistics.

A list of WWPA statistical reports is available online.
