TECH NOTES

WWPA provides supplementary technical information on Western lumber with a series of white papers called Tech Notes. This information is intended to supplement the Association's technical reference publications and to provide more current data and lumber use suggestions.

California Fire Standards and Exterior Wood Products - Rev. 10
(147KB) A review of new regulations for building materials used in new structures in California's Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas, including a list of species and siding, decking and soffit products that meet the California Building Code Chapter 7A.

NDS 2005 Specific Gravity Values for MSR Lumber
(68KB) The majority of machine stress-rated (MSR) lumber produced is used in metal-plate connected (MPC) wood trusses, where lumber痴 specific gravity is a primary design parameter in sizing truss-plates.

Design Values and Spans for Alaskan Species Lumber
(372KB) Design values for Alaska Yellow Cedar, Alaska Hemlock and Alaska Spruce dimension lumber products.

Designing with Western Lumber in the 2001 NDS
(184KB) Reviews changes in shear design values for lumber, specific gravity for MSR lumber, replacing end grain bearing values with compression parallel values and timber design values as shown in the 2001 National Design Specification (NDS©) for Wood.

Design Load Tables For Wood Studwalls Subjected to Wind Pressure
(776KB) A useful set of design load tables for Douglas Fir-Larch and Hem-Fir lumber according to the 1991 edition of ANSI/AF&PA National Design Specification (NDS©) for Wood Construction
.

Wood or Horn-Tailed Wasps

(250 K) Information on identifying Wood or Horn-tailed Wasps, their wood-boring habits and the damage they cause to lumber.

Design Values for ES-LP MSR Grades of 1650 Fb & Higher

(16 K) Engelmann Spruce-Lodgepole Pine Machine Stress-Rated (MSR) lumber is not often fully utilized for engineered wood systems. This Tech Note offers a procedure for taking advantage of ES-LP MSR lumber痴 high gravity, compression perpendicular-to-grain and horizontal shear design values.

Information on the In-Grade Testing Program, Impacts on Design Values
(15 K) An overview of the In-Grade Testing program, which yielded new data on the structural performance of softwood lumber and why lumber performs in certain ways.

Design Load Tables for Solid-Sawn Lumber Beams and Headers
(849 K) This Tech Note makes building with lumber beams and headers more user-friendly by providing load tables for single 4x and 6x plus built-up double and triple 2x wood members from 3 to 14 foot spans.

New Provisions in the NDS for Wood Construction
(496 K) A reprint of an article describes the new provisions incorporated in the National Design Specification for Wood Construction ュ 1997.

Timber Engineering Software

(48 K) A review of software programs available on the market that can speed the analysis and design of wood-frame construction. The list of programs is offered as a service to specifiers and designers, and the listings do not imply an endorsements of these products by WWPA.

Design Load Tables for Wood Columns (Posts)

(105 K) Reviews design loads for simple wood columns from 4x4 up to 12x Western lumber posts. Includes table for incised lumber.

Shrinkage Calculations for Multistory Wood Frame Construction

(85 K) Details lumber moisture content issues and shrinkage calculations necessary for designing Western lumber in multistory projects.
